Hunter Mountain (4040')

Known for it's popular ski area, Hunter moutain is the second largest mountain in the Catskills.  Located in the northern Catskills in Greene County you can view almost all the mountains in the Catskills from Hunter.  To the north you see the three peaks of Blackhead, Blackdome, and Thomas Cole.  To the south you see Slide, east Plateau Mt, and to the west you can see the Spruceton Valley.

     There are many different combonations of trails that you can use to get to the top of Hunter mountain.  There are three trails that lead to it's peak.  They are:  Spruceton Tail (blue), the Hunter Mountain Trail (yellow), and the Becker Hollow Trail (blue).  Each trail is described below.   View the trails on the map below.

[BH] Becker Hollow Trail (Blue)
0.00 Start of trail on Rt. 214, 1.2m south of junction
2.00 with Rt. 23A.
Pass yellow spur trail going right to spring (250') and Hunter tower (0.3m).
2.30 Trail ends. Left on yellow Hunter Mt. Trail to Devil's Acre leanto and Devil's Path (1.35m). Right on blue Spruceton Trail to summit of Hunter and tower (0.3m).

 

[HU] Hunter Mountain Trail (Yellow)
0.00 Junction with Becker Hollow and Spruceton Trails, 0.25m south of Hunter Mt. Tower.
1.35 Trail ends at junction with Devil's Path (red).  Devil's Acre leanto 0.1m to right.
[SP] Spruceton Trail (Blue)
0.00 Junction of trail and Spruceton Road (County Rt. 6) about 6.5m east of West Kill village. Follow blue to left on jeep trail, which is barred to vehicles. Road, continuing ahead with blue markers, is Diamond Notch Trail.
1.70 Height of land. Turn right off old Hunter Road.
2.10 Spring 300' to right of trail on yellow spur,
2.30 John Robb leanto on left.
2.40 Pass yellow Colonel's Chair Trail going left to chairlift (1.0m).
3,35 Hunter Mt, Observatory Tower (4040').
3.60 Trail ends. Blue-marked Backer Hollow Trail
goes left to Devil's Tombstone State Campground (2.3m). Ahead on yellow Hunter Mt, Trail leads to Devil's Acre leanto (1.35m).
