Westkill Mountain (3880')

Located to the west of Hunter and Rusk Mountains, Weskill is at the end of the Devil's Path (red).   Westkill is the sixth highest mountain in the Catskills and it is located in Greene County.

     There are two trails that help you to reach the peak of Westkill.  Those two are the Devil's Path (red) and the Diamond Notch Trail (blue).   Check out the Trails on the map.

 

[DN] Diamond Notch Trail (Blue)
0.00 Bridge at Lanesville on Rt. 214. Turn north on
Diamond Notch Road.
1.50 Road ends. Trail indicated by sign.
2.60 Spring.
3.00 Diamond Notch leanto to right of trail.
3.50 Trail junction with Devil's Path (red markers):left for West Kill Mt. Cross bridge. Devil's Path now gees right to Hunter. Continue left on blue markers. Diamond Notch Falls under bridge.
4.50 Trail ends on Spruceton Road (County Rt. 6) at junction with Spruceton Trail, also blue.

0.00 Platte Clove Road (County Rt. 16) 0.5m west of N.Y.C. Police Camp. Turn south following Prediger Road.
0.40 Limited parking at end of road.
0.90 Trail forks; take left fork (red). Right fork (blue) is Jimmy Dolan Notch Trail.
2.30 Trail joins old road going from Platte Clove to Overlook Mt.
2.35 Turn right at trail junction leaving old road. Overlook Trail (blue) ahead leads to Devil's Kitchen leanto (0.lin) and.Overlook Mt.
4.10 Spectacular lookout after steep ascent.
4.80 Summit of Indian Head Mt. (3573').
6.00 Jimmy Dolan Notch. Trail junction; north on blue markers goes 2.45m back to Platte Clove Road. Continue ahead on red.
6.45 East peak of Twin.
7.05 Summit of Twin Mt. (3640').
7.70 Pecoy Notch. Pass blue trail going right 1.9m to Platte Clove Road (County Rt. 16).
8.90 Summit of Sugarloaf Mt. (3800').
9.85 Pass blue Mink Hollow Trail, Right goes to spring, 0.25m and towards Tannersville. Left goes to leanto (250') and Lake Hill, 5.9m.
10.20 Excellent spring.
11.05 Summit of Plateau Mt. (3840').
13.10 Fine view to north.
14.15 Rt. 214 at Stony Clove Notch. Devil's Tombstone State Campground. Cross road and stream south of dam continuing on red markers.
16.30 Pass yellow Hunter Mt. Trail leading right towards Hunter Mt.
16.40 Devil's Acre leanto and spring.
17.10 Lookout to south and southwest.
18.65 Diamond Notch Falls. Blue trail to right leads to Spruceton Road (1.Om). Continue left on red across bridge and right along stream. Blue trail (left) goes on to Diamond Notch leanto and Lanesville.
19.40 Spring.
19.90 Top of West Kill's east ridge.
20.10 Good rock ledge for getting out of the rain.
21.05 Buck Ridge lookout. Good views to the north, south, and east.
21.15 Summit of West Kill Mt. (3880').
23.20 Summit of western peak.
24.35 Swamp in Mink Hollow; between North Dome and west Kill Mts. Spring on right side of trail.
25.85 End of trail on Spruceton Road (County Rt. 6) about 3.25m east of West Kill village.
